Social Media and the Superbowl

As I watched the Superbowl, I initially noticed how most of the advertisers were using Twitter hashtags, and I later saw a few other use Facebook icons as well. It made me realize how far social media has come since the days I watched the Superbowl as a kid. Bob (our Operations Manager) and I actually watched the game together with our wives, and by the 2nd quarter, I decided to live tweet the event.  When the power went out in the stadium, the tweets only got better and in fact someone was clever enough to register the Twitter handle @SuperBowlLights and amass over 21,000 followers at my last check at the end of the game (they’ve mostly mysteriously unfollowed, however.)

My favorite hashtag of the Superbowl goes to Tide, whose #miraclestain commercial was pretty classic. I am a Joe Montana fan, although being from Maryland, I had to root for the Ravens. I hope Joe enjoyed that one.

Another great commercial was VW’s #GetHappy commercial with the guy with the faux Jamaican accent.  Apparently some people thought it was offensive, and kudos to the social media team at Red Stripe Beer (@RedStripe) for producing this response:

And here is the original VW #GetHappy commercial:

If you are a 49ers fan, let me give you some perspective. Imagine what it’s going to be like at the next Harbaugh family function.
